Hi ,

The 2016 Energy Science & Technology Conference has no more seats available so we apologize for having to turn away over 100 registrants who were not able to submit their payment on time. Fortunately, the presentations will be filmed and made available after the conference. We'll aim to release one presentation per week starting about two weeks after the conference.

SOLAR POWER FOR KIDS

Early last week, I volunteered to teach some basic solar classes at an elementary school camp out using a small 50 watt portable setup. Not only were they very quick at learning, but students in both classes were somewhat obsessed with taking the light output from some 60 watt equivelant LED bulbs and shining them on the solar panels to get it to run itself! Although, because of losses, it will not completely run itself, any of that light that is not used will simply be partially recycled back through the panels thereby allowing the system to have longer running time. The concept is quite valid as this kind of recovery in done in electromagnetic, heat and mechanical systems that many of our associates are involved with. What this shows is that children definitely have an intuitive understanding of the world around us and are perfectly in resonance with open system thermodynamics because in fact, that is all they have ever known.
